Tuesday. 

Thinking we shall kick start this blog again.

We spent Yule in Japan and had a very very nice time. We got some Japanese cold so I was coughing a lot. So irritating. We had gotten a lot of vaccines so we should have made it but but but…

When we got home it had rained enough to ruin most of the sown vegs and all patches were pretty much covered with grass and Billy Goat weed. So what to do but start over again!

Also the fridge had given up and the day after we got home we had to go to town and buy a new one plus lots of food – phew! What a trip all together.

But now it is April! Half year cold, half year warm / hot!

Cold  morning – 15.6 inside, 6.1 outside! Autumn has arrived for sure! 

For a couple of days now we have cut down two trees and cut up one tree laying over one of our roads. The one we call Number One. We cut them in 1 metre lengths so they would fit easily on our ute Mulle. 

Today we finished sawing them into 25 cm’s, splitting them and stacking the wood in the wood shed. Also brought some to the verandah in case of needing an evening fire. 

We also worked in the patches: planted the avo seeds (two have rooted) We also relocated one of the Lychees. We had two in with the Rhubarb pot but one did not thrive there. The other is growing like there is no tomorrow. We planted the tiny dill, ginger  knobs and the parsley that have survived. I also hoped to plant Basil because there were som many but this morning they were all gone. Some I actually found the stalks but the leaves bitten off. Who? What? 

Later when all was planted I went through the soil with a fine “tooth combe” and found only crickets. Do they eat vegetables? Oh well.  

M worked on the fire stove to make a frame so we will not hit our toes on the old metal frame. 

We also filled the veranda shelves with wood, and watered the patches. It will be very dry a couple of weeks forward. 

We must burn some lime we have cut down last year soon too!

No more dips in the creek.

Then it’s time to work on another raised bed. We don’t make them as high as the first one which is in the 4th patch, but mostly because when it rains as hard and long as it can so here, the soil doesn’t run off into the aisles but stays in the frame there. Very good. Hope it stays that way too.

Sen dags att jobba på ännu en förhöjd växtsäng. Vi har dem inte så högt som den första som står i 4:an utan mest för att när det regnar så hårt och länge som det kan göra här så rinner inte jorden ut i gångarna utan stannar kvar. Mycket bra. Hoppas att det blir så också.

So get out all the drills and saw stands, the spirit level, etc. Then start drilling the frames together and take a good look. Time to fill in soil from everywhere and the compost.

Alltså ta fram alla borrmaskiner och sågställningar, vattenpass mm. Sen börja borra ihop ramarna och se så bra. Dags att fylla på jord från överallt och komposten.

he compost now has a small pile of cow dung next to it so we can keep track of that damn weed TSA (Tropical Soda Apple). The native one is ok but the one that comes from foreign countries spreads like wildfire by, mostly, the cows. preferably in waterways so that no animals can get through and drink. It has hard, super sharp spikes pretty much everywhere on the leaves, trunk and branches.

Most of what has survived has been planted out so all we have to do is prepare for the summer and weed.

Komposten har en liten kobajshög nu bredvid den så att vi kan hålla reda på den jävla ogräset TSA (Tropical Soda Apple). Den inhemska är ok men den som kommer utifrån växer till sig, gärna vi vattendrag så att inga djur kan ta sig fram. Den sprids mestadels av kor. Den har hårda supervassa taggar ungefär överallt på blad, stam och kvistar.

Det mesta som klarat sig är utplanterat så bara att förbereda för

för sommaren och att ogräsrensa.

We bought some veranda flowers on the way home too. Then we cleaned the veranda with the pressure washer and threw away / put away a lot of stuff that we had thrown out there as if it were a storage room. The grill had rusted in some essential places so we bought a new one which we then inaugurated by woking vegetables and grilling some beef sausages. Potato salad with it but no photos of this.

We bought Pelargonium Osteospermum which is a Daisy, like a yellow Prästkralge in Swedish. Then I had dug up a nice Geranium that was growing in the vegetable garden. In Swedish it is called Näva and is found all over the world. So in some countries Pelargonium is called Geranium and in others Pelargon. Geranium is the family name and then they differ. Finally I have got this sorted. 

Vi köpte några verandablommor på vägen hem också. Sen gjorde vi rent verandan med högtryckssprutan och slängde / ställde bort en massa grejor som vi langat ut där som om det var ett förråd. Grillen hade rostat sönder på vissa viktigare ställen så vi köpte en ny som vi sedan invigde lite snabbt med att woka grönsaker och grilla lite biffkorv. Potatissallad till det men inga foton på detta.

Vi köpte Pelargonium Osteospermum som är en Daisy, typ en gul Prästkrage. Sen hade jag grävt up en finfin Geranium som växte i grönsakslandet. På svenska heter den Näva och finns över hela världen. Alltså i vissa länder heter Pelargonium Geranium och i andra Pelargon. Geranium är familjenamnet och sen skiljer de sig. Äääntligen har jag fått ordning på detta. 

Our mini native bees love the Bok choy flowers. If only they could deal with all the other flowers too but we have the same problem in Oz as the rest of the world. The bees have a kind of mite that kills them eventually. So you have to be careful about your brood.

There are usually lots of mini bees on all the flowers but this year it is bad. Wonder if they got mites or if they were just washed away by rain. They usually live in hollow trees at the bottom so I hope that is it and that they recouperate. Sad. There were a few on the orange flowers but not many. Not like they usually are.

They do not sting.

Våra små inhemska bin älskar Bok choy blommorna. Om de nu bara kunde ta itu med alla de andra blommorna också men vi har samma problem som resten av världen. Bina har ett slags kvalster som tar död på dem till slut. Så man måste vara rädd om sina telningar. 

Det brukar vara massor av minibin på alla blommor men iår är det illa. Undras om de fått kvalster eller om de bara har regnat bort. De brukar bo i ihåliga träd nertill så hoppas att det är det och att de kommer igen. Sorg. Det var några stycken på apelsinblommorna men inte många inte. Inte som det brukar vara.

De sticks inte.

Vi träffades för bra många år sedan i Afrika och började vara tillsammans.

Det är två veckors lov från skolorna så det var många barnfamiljer. 

Det var en bra och avslappnande vistelse. Vi lagade ingen mat själva utan åt på Aanukas restaurang både frukost, lunch och kvälls. 

Det var väldigt behövligt tyckte vi och när vi åkte hem kände vi oss utvilade och färdiga att ta itu med gårdsarbetet igen.

Här är en Pandanus palm eller s.k. screw pine. Frukten är ätlig men bladen är stickiga.

Sen några blommor som jag inte har lyckats ta reda på vad de heter.

  Dags att plantera Mangoträd nummer 2. Det första står ibland citrusarna. Det var ett tag sedan men ännu inga mangofrukter på det trädet. Det är fortfarande väldigt litet. 

  Nummer 2 kommer vi att sätta nere i vår s.k. fruktlund. Vi döpte om Hästhagen till Fruktlunden eller The Orchard. Men det skrev jag väl någon gång. 

  Time to plant Mango tree number 2. The first one is among the citrus trees. It’s been a while but still no mango fruits on that tree. It’s still very small.

  We’ll put number 2 down in our so-called fruit orchard. We renamed the Horse paddock to The Orchard. But I’m sure I wrote that sometime.

 All things needed. Spade, hole drill, water, netting, stand for the netting, compost from our compost, cane mulch etc. And of course the strong man!

  Allt som behövs. Spade, borrmaskin, vatten, nät, stativ för nätet, kompostjord från vår kompost, sockerrörskompost etc. Och naturligtvis den starke mannen!

First drilling lots of holes for the plant itself and for the poles to hold the net.

  Först borra massor av hål för själva växten och för stolparna som håller nätet.

  Then planting with the our compost mixed with the existing soil and cane mulch all around on top. Water adequately and hope all will be well in a couple of weeks

  Sedan plantera med vår kompost blandad med den befintliga jorden och sockerrörskompost överst runtom. Vattna tillräckligt och hoppas att allt blir bra om ett par veckor.

  Det är Gamla pappan Wallaby. Han är nästan som en liten känguru. Så stor.

And now all is done. Just watering for a week and then more and more seldom. 

  Och nu är allt klart. Bara bevattning i en vecka och sedan mer och mer sällan.

  The Orchard is close enough to the creek so it should be able to find water itself in the future. The previously planted 7 trees thrive but then again we have had so much rain this last year. You never know with the weather.

  Fruktlunden är såpass nära bäcken att den bör leta vatten själv i framtiden. De 7 tidigare planterade träden verkar klara det men vi har ju cokså haft väldigt mycket regn det senaste året så man vet aldrig med vädret hur det går.

  Lite småplantor som ska ner i krukor och stå på tillväxt. Skogsskräppa med röda vener i bladen, gräslök och ett träd som heter Callistemon eller bottlebrush för att blomman ser ut som en flaskborste. Väldigt populär bland småfåglar.

   Some small plants that are going to be put in pots and left to grow. Sorrel with red veins in the leaves, chives and a tree called Callistemon or bottlebrush because the flower looks like a bottle brush. Very popular with small birds.

Some onion that started growing in the pantry. Några lökar som börjat växa i förrådet.

Sen var det en film på Willie Wagtail, en fågel som vi har flera stycken av runt huset. Tyvärr godkänner inte den här sajten film typen men fågeln   vittjar spindelnäten på verandan.  A short film of Willie Wagtail whittling the cobwebs on the porch. De har tagit god tid på sig. Från kärna till halvstort träd – 8 år. Planterade kärnan 2017 i en kruka och 2021 i jorden nere vid bananerna. Samtidigt med dem och nu äntligen ser det ut som blomknoppar. Hoppas, hoppas, hoppas!

They have taken their time. From seed to half-sized tree – 8 years. Planted the seed in 2017 in a pot and in 2021 in the ground down by the bananas. At the same time as them and now finally it looks like flower buds. Hope, hope, hope!

Har inte sett den på väääldigt länge! Men nu är våren här äntligen och med den våra två Galahfåglar som kommer ett par dagar och sedan flyger vidare. Verkar som om vi har ett par julgranskulor som vill bo kvar här ett tag också (Australian King Parrot) och även Welcome Svalorna swishar omkring och två har redan fått barn som blivit vuxna. Det går fort.

Våra wallabie’ar verkar föröka sig också. Så det betyder att vår Dingo förmodligen ändera gått till sällare jaktmarker eller också lurpassar på korna. Det gäller nog också den där luriga räven vi såg i faggorna förra året.

Haven’t seen any of them in a very long time! But now spring is finally here and with it our two Galah Birds that come for a couple of days and then fly away. It seems like we have a couple of Christmas tree decorations that want to stay here for a while too (Australian King Parrot) and also the Welcome Swallows are swishing around and two have already had babies that have grown up. Birdlife here is in the fast lane.

Our wallabies seem to be multiplying too. So that means our Dingo has probably moved to the happy hunting grounds or is lurking by the cows. That probably also applies to that sneaky fox we saw in the fields last year.

Windy day we are all warned to stay at home or at some safe place but now it’s over. Only one of the small Beckea’s broke and fell.

Dags för citronerna. Riva skalet och frys, kläm resten till juice.
