First day of frost in the morning. Usually it is right at sunrise and then tapers off as the sun rises. Did not reach the patches. 2 mice by the Hügelkultur, that is the raised bed made with corrugated roof sheets. Of course the mice gets in through the corrugation openings. We will have to do something about that. The Kooka was happy though. So also a new trial on the Swedish yule ham. Spiced the ham, set the stock to cool off, M is making banana bread. Poured the stock over the ham and into the fridge. Now ca 10 to 20 days with a couple of turns of the ham in between. Raked and cleared by the grapes. 

Just nu har vi följande fåglar i omgivningen. Rosellafåglar, Gultofskakaduor, Australian King Parrot Currawong och Satin Bowerbirds i flockar. Särskilt vill de åt frukten och grönsakerna. Vi har täckt några träd samt ettan och tvåan och flera av sängarna i 3:an och 4:an i väntan på att vi ska ta oss till Bunnings och köpa fler nät. Just nu regnar det.

Right now we have Rosellas, Sulfurcrested Cockatoos, Australian King Parrots, Currawongs, Satin Bowerbirds except for the stationary Maggies, Crows and the Kooka. Now and then the Majestic ones come by to check for nuts or so. (Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos). They want our fruit and veg’s. We now have covered no 1 and 2 with nets and several of the beds. Soooon Bunnings for more nets.

Cleaning some vegies in the kitchen made for cleaning harvest in.

So we built a raised garden bed out of stuff lying around. Corrugated roof sheets, timber and a dead tree from the fires we cut up and put on the bottom.

Then we took lots of soil from a pile the former owners had gathered and filled it together with grass, compost and compost we bought from Bunnings.

Add potatoes in one quarter to see if we could get anything growing and we did! Well we have not seen any potatoes yet but the plants are growing at least. Next we will sow capsicum, strawberries and maybe something else.

Så vi byggde en upphöjd trädgårdssäng av material som låg på tomten. Korrugerade takplåtar, virke som låg under taket på kullen, ett dött träd från bränderna som vi sågade upp och la på botten.

Sedan tog vi massor av jord från en hög de tidigare ägarna hade samlat ihop i hagen och fyllde på tillsammans med gräs, kompost och kompost jord som vi köpt från Bunnings.

Sättpotatis på en fjärdedel av sängen för att se om vi kunde få något att växa och det gjorde det! Nåväl vi har inte sett någon potatis än men plantorna växer i alla fall. Härnäst ska vi så paprika, jordgubbar och kanske något annat.

One of the three surviving banana trees has an offspring! Yippee! One of the three twigs from the fig tree I planted has survived and now has 5 figs ripening. Bought a rhubarb plant and planted in a pot on the porch. In the middle of the night I heard the possum pattering on the roof, ran up and turned on the porch light and moved the pots (which are on a tray on a rolling thing) and hoped for the best! This possum didn’t shy away from the light and ate all but one of the leaves on the rhubarb. Now they are netted. One of my pot macadamias has died. I’m hoping it will send something up from the roots but I’m probably hoping in vain.

Made a list of our so-called backyard birds but need to adjust it a bit.

Ett av de tre överlevande bananträden har en avkomma! hurra! En av de tre kvistarna från fikonträdet jag planterat har överlevt och har nu 5 fikon som mognar. Köpte en rabarberplanta och planterade i en kruka på verandan. Mitt i natten hörde jag att possumen smattrade i taket, sprang upp och tände verandalampan och flyttade på krukorna (som står på en bricka på en rullande sak) och hoppades på det bästa! Den här possumen drog sig inte för ljuset och åt alla utom ett av bladen på rabarbern. Nu är de nätade. En av mina kruka macadamias har dött. Jag hoppas att det kommer att skicka upp något från rötterna men jag hoppas nog förgäves.

Gjorde en lista på våra så kallade bakgårdsfåglar men behöver justera den lite.

The night was awful and stormy and we got little sleep but we had 3 appointments so must into town. Up 6 and off at 7. Heard Ben so Postmans is clear. We will take it. A bit of a slip and slide but ok. Chores (the times are when we got the receipts) : 10.07 M:s doc for check-up and med’s, 10.20 Super Cheap for hose to shipper snipper which got a leak, 10.32 Preen for the push mower – finally 3 months later, 11 Bunnings for garden stuff, 11.15 BWS for some alcoholic sustenance, 12.20 Dentist for M fastening the implants, 13.30 Lou’s lunch, 13.51 Friendlies for the med’s, 14.40 OPSM for eye check and new readers so I have two pairs- all was ok, 16.07 Woolies for food, 16.30 Diesel and petrol for ute and cannisters, then some coffee with ice cream, we had berought a thermos with water and bought ice cream at Woolies. On the way home, round about Nulla Nulla I got a stomach swelling and odd feeling of sickness, on Postmans it got worse. We had to stop once to remove a tree and I got out and lifted away some branches and it felt better – lots of farting and burping. 18.34  unpacked at home and a grog and felt much better. Just a sandwich and we will eat the prawns tomorrow, just too tired. As usual met a lot of nice peep to yarn a bit with except the Preen guys they are always dour except the young redheaded guy. Beautiful dry sunny day and just a bit of slipping and sliding on the way home!

Bäcken har fått en djup fåra i mitten igen. Skönt. Kanske fiskarna kommer tillbaka igen. Men strömmen är stark så ynglen bor förhoppningsvis någon annanstans och överlever.

Något har tagit sig in i ena trädgårdslandet. Riktigt knuffat sig in igenom staketet och ut igen. Den lämnade lite bajshögar och en hög med urätna ärtskidor. Håhåjaja det djurlivet.

Skördade ärtorna idag. De var ett felköp. Skulle varit sådana där man äter rakt av och inte spritar. Men får nog ihop två dl kanske. Sen rev jag resten och sådde andra omgången majs. Första omgången ruttnade bort i regnen.

Sen håller vi på att få till en förhöjd grönsakssäng. Fåse om jag kan lägga ur några foton senare. Vi måste få till lite grenar och sen komport och jord och sen s.k cane mulch som är som gräs och bra att ha som lager mot ogräs sen.

Fick ischias för några månader sedan när vi röjde vägen efter stormen i Maj. Det har inte gått över men upptäckte att det känns bättre när jag har stått i bäcken och kylt ner rygg och höft en stund. Sen har det nu torkat tillräckligt i backen så att vi har kunnat börja gå lite. Gick lite för långt häromdagen bara så nu sitter jag här hm haltar omkring igen. Hugaligen!

Nu känns det som sommar och skönt. Man kan har kortbyxor och ärmlöst.

Verandan kommer till sin rätt igen.

Former owners visited a couple of days. They thought we had done good with the house and environments. They camped down by the creek and took a couple of short walks. He was recuperating from a short bout of covid. They also took the canoes for a spin. We learned a couple of new trees. Among the interesting was a tree which I thought was another Davidson’s Plum but is a Native Tamarind tree. I was going to cut down a neighbouring tree to give it more sun but now I shall not. We had a lot of laughs. They also visited neighbours across the creek and were a bit disappointed that they were not a bit interested in them at all but only returned the conversation to the same old thing that happened with another neighbour 25 years ago when they all moved in here.

Well I guess we are all getting older and closest neighbours are first to go.
