20210722 Thursday.

Lots of frost! 7˚ inside, 1.8 outside!

Laundry, sawed and split wood – Jen used the new electric machine saw! Walked 40 min – still trying to get walking to be a routine, lunch, still chilly, sawed the rest of a pile of smaller and shorter wood, cleaned up the area around the wood shed.

Animals are hungry and try to get to the seeds of the grapefruit but it tastes tooo bad so they only make small marks on the peel, coffee time and then we called it a day. Getting used to all this body work after all the rains. It’s drying up a bit now but cold.

20210722 torsdag. Massor av frost! 7˚ inne, 1,8 ute! Tvätt, sågad och klöv ved – Jen använde den nya elektriska maskinsågen! Gick 40 minuter – försöker fortfarande få at gå bli en rutin, lunch, fortfarande kyligt, sågade resten av en högen med mindre och kortare ved typ skräpved, städade området runt vedboden.

Djur i omgivningen är hungriga och försöker komma till grapefruktens frön men det smakar så illa så de gör bara små märken på skalet, kaffedags och sedan avslutade vi dagen.

Att vänja sig vid allt detta kroppsarbete efter alla regn. Vi tar det pö om pö. Det torkar upp lite nu men kallt.

Nothing happening, just your day to day mundane chores.

Raking the garden, working the patches, washing clothes when the sun is shining and gathering medium wood sticks for fire starters.

Beautiful day without rain. Jen had a bad night and took a nap in the afternoon. Shelled some macadamias from the outer cover and put in a new box.

Fixed the garden shed inside so it is easy to reach all the tools. Very nice. And a picture of Mick’s greed robe. 

Vacker dag utan regn. Jen hade en dålig natt och tog en tupplur på eftermiddagen. Skalade några makadamier från ytterkåpan och lade i en ny låda.

Fixade trädgårdshuset inuti så att det är lätt att nå alla verktyg. Mycket trevligt. Och en bild av Micks gröna badrock.

One of them lazy’s. Fog was thick in the morning. Made Kumquat squash. Made the lamb steak with garden rosemary in the pressure cooker and used the bouillion to make a gorgeous sauce and had it with garden white sweet potato and after some mandarins. Sanded the rods for the bedroom curtains. Since we have no traffic and no lamp posts it does not really matter if the curtains are up or not yet. Will iron them tomorrow. Did some raking under the maca’ tree. Made some more holes in the vent for the bedroom. After that just sat by the fire and did som internet surfing and what not.

En av de lata dagarna. Dimman var tjock på morgonen. Gjorde Kumquat squash. Gjorde lammbiffen med trädgårdens rosmarin i tryckkokaren och använde buljongen för att göra en underbar sås och hade den med trädgårdens sötpotatis och efteråt några mandariner. Slipade stängerna till sovrumsgardinerna. Eftersom vi inte har trafik och inga gatulampor spelar det ingen roll om gardinerna är uppsatta eller inte ännu. Stryker dem imorgon. Gjorde lite kratta under maca-trädet. Gjorde några fler hål i ventilen för sovrummet. Därefter satt bara vid elden och surfa på internet och annat.

 A bit of laundry to first wash out from the dying yesterday and second to wash the curtains. Intended to sand the rods too but that never happened. Mick made Kumquat squash (and picked Kumquats and took the frozen ones too). Intended to do lamb in the pressure cooker but that never happened.Had a nice pasta, mushroom, basil lunch with a show from the computer and then time to fill the water tank. That did happen after a long timel. The hose was empty. How did it leak? So after a while we got it going finally. The on to the above chores and on to the ongoing weeding in patch 1. Rain was expected but never came. Maybe tomorrow? The ground is fatigued with water but parts that stick up are drying. Had to water the sowed parts again. Freed the Elephant garlic and three of the Artichokes. Just one of those days when plans don’t work out.

Lite tvätt för att först tvätta ut från färgandet igår och andra för att tvätta gardinerna. Tänkte också slipa gardinstängerna som är av trä men det hände aldrig. Mick gjorde Kumquat squash (och plockade Kumquats och tog också de frysta). Tänkte göra lamm i tryckkokaren men det hände aldrig. Hade en fin pasta, svamp, basilika lunch med en show från datorn och sedan dags att fylla vattentanken. Det hände efter en lång tid. Slangen var tom. Hur läckte det? Så efter ett tag kom vi äntligen igång.Vidare med ovanstående sysslor och vidare till den pågående ogräsrensningen i lapp 1. Regn förväntades men kom aldrig. Kanske imorgon? Marken är trött av vatten men delar som sticker upp torkar. Måste vattna de sådda delarna igen. Befriade elefant vitlök och tre av kronärtskockorna. Bara en av de dagar då planerna inte fungerar.

Thursday. The list of chores to do apart from dailies is long. Got wood to the verandah, worked in patch1 and sowed more Silverbeet (Mangold, Chard). Found that the Russian / Elephant garlic actually have made it and is groing among the tall grass. The Artichoke we relocated and also sowed have also made it so when it comes to weeding there we have to be very careful. Poured lots of coffee on the strawberries against the miniscule slugs hoping that it will help. Made pancakes, froze the meat stew I made yesterday in the old Izzy pressure cooker, M made a small vent for one of the windows in the master bedroom. Mick died his bathrobe green, a very nice green. Take a pic tomorrow. We are still a bit immobile in the mornings and do not get going until after morning coffee around 10-ish but we are working on that. Had some issues with the internet yesterday and called them. It got fixed but we think they have just forgotten to tick off something when they upgraded us some months ago. One of our kitchen appliances have broken and shows tilt all the time. The appliance maker Sunbeam are sending a new one (we asked them how we could fix it but we still have some months on the warranty so all is fine). Having popcorn!! Mick’s 5 days of convalescence are over and he can eat anything but carefully. 

Listan över sysslor att göra förutom dagens är lång. Fick ved till verandan, arbetade i grönsaksland 1 och sått mer Silverbeet (Mangold, Chard). Hittade att den ryska / elefant vitlök faktiskt har överlevt och växer bland det höga gräset. Kronärtskockan vi flyttade och sått har också överlelvt så när det gäller ogräs där måste vi vara mycket försiktiga. Hällde massor av kaffe på jordgubbarna mot pyttesniglar i hopp om att det kommer att hjälpa. Gjorde pannkakor, frös köttgrytan som jag gjorde i går i den gamla Izzy tryckkokaren, M gjorde en liten ventil till ett av fönstren i sovrummet. Mick färgade sin morgonrock grön, en väldigt fin grön. Tar en bild imorgon. Vi är fortfarande lite orörliga på morgonen och kommer inte igång förrän efter morgonkaffet runt 10-tiden men vi jobbar på det. Hade några problem med internet igår och ringde dem. Det fixades men vi tror att de precis har glömt att kryssa för något när de uppgraderade oss för några månader sedan. En av våra köksapparater har gått sönder och visar att den lutar hela tiden. Apparattillverkaren Sunbeam skickar en ny (vi frågade dem hur vi skulle kunna fixa det men vi har fortfarande några månader på garantin så allt var bra). Har popcorn ikväll !! Micks 5 dagar av konvalescens är över och han kan äta allt men vara lite försiktig.

Sometimes you plan the day and it just does not work. Usually we plan to much and things happen. So anyway we got the new shower and pump set up so that we do not have to change the pressure all the time mid shower. Something went wrong. This is the third shower we buy. We don’t know why they do not work properly without a lot of intervention but they don’t. They all look the same even though the brand name is different.   For sometime we have fought the cockatoos. Not only the black old nut thief from years but now also the Sulphur Crested ones!  So sepping out of the house: Carnage!! Lucky for us they loose about one fourth of the nuts that fall to the groudn so we can pick them up soooo I guess Thank you! (worse is when they try to get to them before they are ripe.

And now that the rains have stopped and the dry time has started it is time to see if we can do anything about the vegetable patches.

Last week Mick did a quick visit and sowed cilantro/coriander, two different cabbages, Romaine lettuce and Pak choi. None of which has poked up it’s little greenery yet. Late afternoon I got to go out and do a short stint of weeding in patch 1. Cleared out among the capsicum and oregano with a rosemary among them, gave them some compost, watered and poured coffee on them against the snails.

Then the sun went down behind the mountains and it got cold. We also have some addition to our coming tree plantation: 4 banana  plants! We hope they will survive the frosty period so that we can plant them in mid to late spring.

Also the first tick!!! Yeachh!

Ibland planerar du dagen och det fungerar bara inte. Vanligtvis planerar vi för mycket och saker händer. Så ändå lyckades Mick den nya duschen och pumpen installerad så att vi inte behöver ändra trycket hela tiden mitt i duschen. Något är alltid fel. Det här är den tredje duschen vi köper. Vi vet inte varför de inte fungerar ordentligt utan mycket ingripande men de gör de inte. De ser alla likadana ut trots att varumärket är annorlunda. Under en tid har vi kämpat mot kakaduerna. Inte bara den svarta gamla nöttyven från förr om åren utan nu också de Större Gultofskakaduorna (Sulphur Crested Cockatoo)! Så ja stiger ut ur huset: Nötblodbad !! Tur för oss att de tappar ungefär en fjärdedel av nötterna som faller till marken så att vi kan plocka upp dem, sååå antar jag, tack! (värre är när de försöker komma åt dem innan de är mogna. Och nu när regnet har slutat och torktiden har börjat är det dags att se om vi kan göra något åt ​​grönsakslanden. Förra veckan gjorde Mick ett snabbt besök och sådde koriander / koriander, två olika vitkålar, Romaine-sallad och Pak choi. Ingen av dem har skjutit upp ännu. Do you speak Kooka?

This is what we noticed. A rather big Kooka sat in the Jackaranda tree. We threw a mouse in the grass underneath it. After a little while it flew down and took it flew up again and ate it. Then it left. Next day a smaller Kooka flew on to the same branch of the Jackaranda tree. We threw a dead mouse (it had drowned by itself in a bucket of water under the roof guttert) on the grass under it. After looking at it for a very long time and at us who cheered it on it flew down and picked it up. We cheered it on to eat it. Then it started to make odd noises. Not kookalike at all. It went at it with the mouse in its mouth for a long time. 10 min or so. Then finally it flew away with the mouse. After a minute we heard it making it’s sound and interacting with another Kooka. then after maybe 10 minutes it came back with the mouse still in it’s mouth. It sat down on the branch and looked at us and ate the mouse. Then it looked very satisfied. It started looking for another mouse and we actually had one to give. It must have gotten thumbs up it was edible.

We have notice a lot of animals will only eat what mum said was ok to eat!

Here we folded the hammock before the rains and a spider mom got mad. She really tries to protect her brood. Försvarar sina små! Hade funnit ett mysigt ställe i hängmattan. Tyvärr….

A frog in the shower. It has lived on the veranda for some time and we named it Grodan Boll (Frog the Ball), Grodan Boll i duschen.

Here is a moth. It is a Gnathothlibus Eras. These kinds of moths are beautiful but horrible. When I was a kid they always flew in and got stuck in my blond hair. Yuck! Jag kallar de här nattfjärilarna för bombplan. de kör in i mitt blonda hår och snurrar runt … usch och fy! Men vackra är de.

Here is the larvae of an Impatiens Hawk Moth. Another beautiful moth but also just as bad. This one is also the culprit of eating down our Fuchsias on the verandah. We have blamed it on first Alex the Possum, second the Bandicoot and last but not least the poor Grodan Boll. And all along it was this bad but beautiful “boy”. We put him on the Gardenia and later it was gone. Larverna av Imaptiens Hawk Moth. Likadant här! De här är fuchsiagnagaren. INTE grodan, inte Alex possumen och inte bandicooten.

Here you can see the difference between the Cedars. White Cedar and Red Cedar. These are native Australians. Took a pic when looking for places to plant the avo, mango and the two maca’s. We have already started to make way among the Privets but discovered som Red’s and have to decide which ones to keep so they will grow nice and beautiful. Vi ska plantera men försöka spara de vackraste träden.

This is an odd mushroom! A Phallus rubicundus. En underlig svamp som växte utanför grönsakslanden.

And between the rain showers we have now we do small chores around the house.

Here our first harvested pumpkin. Not many this year. May have to sow more later for May-Aug harvest.

A bit of daily harvest. Första pumpan skördad.

Daily harvest. Dagens lilla skörd. Ofta lagom till mat.

Sage drying. Almost dried and will be mortared and added to the Sage jar. Salvia på tork.

Oregano drying. Will remove the the stems for faster drying. Oregano på tork.

Thyme, also time to pound it into more or less powder and add to the Thyme jar. Timjan på tork.

Latest harvest are the Grapes. Not many at all this year but four small jars of jam got made. Druvskörden blev liten i år. Det blev några burkar sylt.  

And at the same time we of course must uphold the tradition of making and eating the Semla bun. Baking , making our own almond paste. 

The pie came out great and now for the Semlor! Sist men inte minst Semlor!

Ahhhh!

Now we have the hot summer time. Early mornings we go to work and then have a late breakfast and the hot hours descend on us. Had a couple of those but today we are expecting rain. or well we’ll see. Most of the time we will not get rain unless there is a 80 + % chance of it coming or if it comes from the sea. Anyway…

Started on the second oven mitt and making it a little longer.

So mornings are either working the patches or as of late cutting the grass and weeds around the roof storage and then intending to flatten the walls shoveled up byt the dozer during the fires. They made good fire walls – roads but it takes time to flatten them to orginal shape = flat.

Nu har vi den heta sommartiden. Tidigt på morgonen går vi till jobbet och äter sedan en sen frukost och de varma timmarna faller över oss. Hade ett par av dem men idag förväntar vi oss regn. eller väl vi får se. För det mesta får vi inte regn om det inte finns 80 +% chans att det kommer eller om det kommer från havet. I alla fall… Började på den andra ugnshandsken och gör den lite längre. 

Så morgnarna arbetar antingen med grönsakslandet eller så att de sen klipper gräset och ogräset runt takförrådet och sedan tänker platta ut de väggar som skjutits upp av schaktmaskinen under bränderna. De skapade bra eldväggar – vägar men det tar tid att platta dem till originalform = platt.
